Obverse description Cruciform design composed of four broad leaves or wedge-shaped segments radiating symmetrically from a central multi-rayed sunburst, rendered in the characteristic La Tène artistic style. The interstices between the leaves are occupied by pellet groupings and curvilinear ornamental infill. A stylised bird's head motif, depicted in profile with a curved beak and pellet eye, is positioned at the periphery of the design. The overall composition fills the irregular flan with bold, deeply struck relief typical of British Celtic quarter stater coinage.

Additional information

This type belongs to the period immediately surrounding Caesar's two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC, when the Atrebates under Commius — a Gaulish chieftain appointed by Caesar himself as client-king — were navigating an increasingly unstable relationship with Rome. Commius eventually defected, becoming one of Caesar's most determined enemies in the Gallic uprising of 52 BC. Whether coins of this type were struck before or after that rupture remains debated, but the dating places them squarely within that political fracture.
