Reverse description A horse prances to the right in a bold, plastic Celtic style, its rounded, well-modelled legs rendered in a characteristic 'wild' manner with flowing musculature. A branch or vegetal ornament appears above the horse's back in the upper field, while additional decorative elements occupy the surrounding field. The legend CVN is inscribed in Latin characters below the horse in the lower field, serving as an abbreviation for Cunobelin, the issuing ruler. The overall composition is vigorous and lively, typical of the highest-quality Trinovantian and Catuvellaunian coinage of the early first century AD.

Additional information

Cunobelinus ruled from Camulodunum — modern Colchester — and commanded the most powerful tribal confederation in pre-conquest Britain, a fact that did not escape Roman attention. Shakespeare's Cymbeline is a garbled memory of the man. His coinage is unusually diverse in die variety, and the "Rounded Leg" designation here isolates a specific die characteristic within the Plastic / Wild A classification — a granularity that reflects just how thoroughly this series has been studied relative to its tiny physical scale.

The quarter stater denomination was the workhorse of high-value exchange in the southeast. At 1.3g, the gold content was meaningful.
