The portrait is rendered in the formal hieratic Byzantine style characteristic of mid-seventh-century coinage. A Latin legend encircles the effigy in the field, reading DN CONSTANTI, abbreviated from Dominus Noster Constantinus. The surrounding Latin legend reads VICTORIA AVG, invoking the Victory of the Augustus, while the exergual mark CONOB certifies the coin as struck in pure gold to the Constantinople standard. The globular flan and somewhat irregular strike reflect the Carthage mint's production characteristics of this era. |
