Obverse description Central field occupied by the Medici arms — a shield bearing the characteristic palle (balls) arranged in the traditional Medici pattern — surmounted by a ducal crown with elaborate ornamentation. The shield is set within a decorative mantling. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire composition, reading ALEXANDER MED R P FLOREN DVX, identifying Alessandro de' Medici as Duke of the Florentine Republic. The lettering is separated by pellets and rendered in a Gothic-influenced Roman capital script consistent with Florentine Renaissance die-cutting practice.
