The gigliato design itself was borrowed from the Angevin coinage of Naples, adopted by the Hospitallers as a deliberate signal of legitimacy and commercial interoperability across the eastern Mediterranean trade networks. Metcalf's classification places this among the scarcer Grand Master issues of the Rhodian series, with Roger's decade-long mastership producing fewer documented die combinations than either his predecessor or successor.
