George Court & Sons was a long-established Auckland draper and department store, and credit coupons of this type were issued as a form of lay-by or store credit instrument — a private scrip system that sidestepped the need for cash transactions at the point of redemption. The 2'6 denomination places this in the pre-decimal New Zealand currency system, making it a pre-1967 issue.
Auckland printing is confirmed, though the specific printer is unrecorded in standard references. Store-issued credit coupons from New Zealand retailers of this period survive in tiny numbers — most were redeemed and discarded.
