| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field displays the castle (Castello) of Genoa rendered in high relief within a cusped quatrefoil frame, the gateway depicted with three arched portals and flanking towers. The quatrefoil border is elaborately decorated with interlaced vine scrollwork and small rosettes in the Gothic style. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the outer legend. The circumferential legend in uncial Latin characters reads DVX IANVVENSIVM PRIMVS, identifying Simon Boccanegra as the first Doge of Genoa, introduced by a cross pattee. The entire design is characteristic of 14th-century Genoese hammered gold coinage. |
