Korça's ½ Frange belongs to one of the more obscure wartime monetary experiments in southeastern Europe. In late 1916, French forces established the Autonomous Republic of Korça — a small Albanian enclave under military administration — and local authorities issued their own currency rather than relying entirely on French military scrip. The series ran until 1918, when the republic was dissolved following the armistice and the territory was absorbed back into Albanian and Greek political disputes.
The Finance Director designation as issuing authority reflects the improvised civil structure of the republic rather than any established banking institution. No central bank existed; these notes were administrative instruments of a provisional government that lasted barely two years.
