The franc à pied was a royal French type introduced by John II in 1360, struck partly to fund his own ransom after capture at Poitiers. Cambrai's bishops, holding the city as an imperial fief while simultaneously navigating French political pressure, were among the ecclesiastical lords who exercised the right to strike imitative gold in this period. Robert de Genève — later the Avignon antipope Clement VII — held the see from 1368 to 1371, making this a coin struck by a man who would soon split the Latin Church.
