| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare-headed, armored bust of Henry III of Navarre (the future Henry IV of France) facing left, with flowing hair and a ruffled collar visible at the truncation. The portrait is rendered in a robust late Renaissance style typical of hammered French feudal coinage. A rosette ornament appears at the base of the bust. The surrounding circular legend, separated from the field by a beaded inner border, reads: .HENRICVS. IIII. D. G. REX. NAVARRE. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Henry III of Navarre — the future Henry IV of France — struck these francs during the Wars of Religion, a period when his ability to actually govern Navarre was repeatedly disrupted by Catholic League pressure and intermittent military campaigning. The franc denomination itself was borrowed directly from the French royal monetary system, a deliberate statement of parity from a king who already had his eye on Paris.
Boudeau 598 is occasionally encountered with die-alignment irregularities attributable to the limited workshop infrastructure at Pau, the principal Navarrese mint of the period.
