Louis XIII was nine years old when his father Henri IV was assassinated in 1610, leaving his mother Marie de Médicis as regent. The col fraisé — the ruffled collar visible on this bust type — was already an aging fashion by 1616, and the design was updated within a few years as royal portraiture modernized. These francs were struck at multiple provincial mints simultaneously, a decentralized system that produced considerable variation in die quality and planchet preparation across the series.
