Waleran III de Luxembourg, Count of Saint-Pol, was one of the more consequential — and opportunistic — figures of the Hundred Years' War, switching allegiances between France and England with calculated precision. This franc à pied copies the royal French type introduced by Jean II in 1360, a deliberate act of monetary mimicry common among semi-autonomous lords seeking to circulate coin on the back of an established currency's credibility. Feudal minting rights in the County of Saint-Pol were exercised sparingly, which keeps genuine examples scarce.
