Obverse description Central field occupied by three lines of Kufic Arabic script presenting the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada), reading 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner.' A mint and date formula in smaller script occupies the lower margin or inner border area, recording the striking at Sijilmasa in the year 439 AH. The legends are contained within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, characteristic of hammered fractional gold coinage of the Maghreb. The overall style is consistent with North African Fatimid-influenced epigraphic coinage of the mid-fifth century AH.
