| Obverse description | Central field occupied by three lines of Kufic Arabic script presenting the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada), reading 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner.' A mint and date formula in smaller script occupies the lower margin or inner border area, recording the striking at Sijilmasa in the year 439 AH. The legends are contained within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, characteristic of hammered fractional gold coinage of the Maghreb. The overall style is consistent with North African Fatimid-influenced epigraphic coinage of the mid-fifth century AH. |
