Additional information

The Amirid taifa of Valencia emerged from the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba during the fitna, the civil war that fragmented al-Andalus into dozens of competing petty kingdoms after 1009. 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Mansur ruled Valencia for four decades — an unusual span of stability for the period — by playing rival powers against one another and maintaining tribute payments to both Christian northern kingdoms and neighboring Muslim taifas simultaneously.

Fractional gold of this type circulated in a payment economy where full dinars were too valuable for everyday transactions. At 0.40 g, these pieces were cut to precise fractions under strict weight standards inherited from Fatimid and Umayyad monetary practice.
