| Beschrijving voorzijde | Within an inner beaded circle, a downward-pointing crescent surmounts a five-pointed star in the central field. The Islamic-influenced celestial motif is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of Crusader coinage. The surrounding legend ANTIOCIIIA, naming the city of Antioch, runs along the periphery of the flan. |

Bohemond III ruled Antioch for nearly four decades — an unusually long tenure for a Crusader state where violent succession was the norm. These fractional bronze pieces circulated alongside the silver deniers of the principality in a local economy that depended heavily on trade with both Byzantine merchants and the surrounding Muslim population, making bilingual and cross-cultural familiarity with Antiochene coinage genuinely practical rather than incidental.
Metcalf's corpus work on Crusader coinages identified significant die variation across this long reign, and examples attributed to the 1163–1201 bracket frequently show considerable flan irregularity from inconsistent casting preparation.
