Zhizhi Yuan Nian marks the first year of the Zhizhi reign period under Yingzong, the fourth emperor of the Yuan dynasty, who took the throne in 1320 at around fourteen years old. His reign lasted barely three years before he was killed in the Nanpo coup of 1323. Whether this piece saw any genuine transactional use or was produced purely for ritual distribution remains an open question — small bronzes of this type frequently circulated within temple economies entirely separate from imperial monetary channels.
