The eagle's two heads face outward to left and right respectively, rendered in a bold medieval style characteristic of Savoyard coinage. Amadeus VI — the "Green Count," named for the color worn at a 1348 tournament — ruled Savoy through decades of territorial consolidation and crusading ambition, including a 1366 expedition into the Balkans at the request of Byzantine Emperor John V Palaeologus. The fort, a small fractional denomination, circulated in a county that straddled Alpine trade routes connecting the Italian peninsula to France and the Rhine, making even minor silver issues instruments of real commercial necessity.
The forty-year span of this type reflects a deliberately stable monetary policy — unusual for the period.
