Valentinian II was twelve years old when this coin was struck — elevated to co-emperor in 375 by his father Valentinian I's army, largely to prevent Gratian from holding sole western rule. The VOT X MVLT XX votive legend marks a tenth-anniversary prayer fulfilled and a twentieth anticipated, a routine imperial formula that in this case outlasted all political reality: Valentinian II never reached the twentieth year of his reign, dying in 392 under circumstances that strongly suggest murder by his Frankish general Arbogast.
