| Obverse description | Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinianus II facing right, depicted in the late Roman imperial style with a close-cropped portrait. The legend encircles the effigy along the outer border, rendered in Latin capital letters. The diadem is composed of a row of pearls, and the paludamentum is visible over the cuirass at the shoulder. The portrait conveys youthful imperial authority consistent with Valentinianus II's early reign. |

Valentinian II was barely eight years old when elevated to Augustus in 375 AD, a purely dynastic maneuver by the western army following the sudden death of his father Valentinian I. The Aquileia mint, one of the most productive western facilities of the late fourth century, struck this issue during the years when real power lay with the general Gratian and, in the east, Theodosius I — the three emperors whose joint rule the CONCORDIA AVGGG legend nominally celebrated. The harmony it advertised was largely fictitious.
