Valentinian I came to power in 364 AD through military acclamation following the sudden death of Jovian, and within hours of his elevation he was pressured by the army to name a co-emperor — a demand that resulted in his brother Valens receiving the eastern half of the empire. The SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE reverse type was a deliberate propaganda choice for a reign defined by frontier instability, particularly along the Rhine and Danube, where Valentinian would spend most of his rule personally commanding defensive campaigns. He died in 375 during a furious tirade at a Quadi diplomatic delegation — a burst blood vessel mid-audience.
