The emperor is depicted with a strong, idealized facial profile, the paludamentum fastened at the right shoulder over the cuirass. The circumferential legend D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG runs around the periphery in Latin capitals, partially visible on the flan. The overall style is characteristic of the Antioch mint workshops of the mid-fourth century AD. |
