Obverse description Two facing busts arranged side by side in the field: at left, the bearded effigy of Emperor Michael II, draped in a chlamys and crowned with a cross-surmounted stemma; at right, the beardless effigy of co-emperor Theophilos, clad in a loros and likewise crowned with a cross. The portraits are rendered in the flat, stylized manner characteristic of Sicilian provincial Byzantine coinage of the early ninth century. A abbreviated bilingual legend identifying the two rulers flanks the busts in the field.
