Magnentius seized power in January 350 by having himself proclaimed emperor at a dinner party in Autun, killing Constans in the process. His regime lasted only until August 353, when defeat at Mons Seleucus prompted his suicide. The brevity of his rule, combined with the disruption of official minting, encouraged peripheral workshops to strike imitative bronzes — particularly in Britain and northern Gaul, where the supply of official coin dried up fastest.
At 1.4g and 14mm, this piece has been reduced well below the official module through successive copying rather than deliberate policy — a characteristic shrinkage seen when unofficial celators worked from circulating coins rather than official dies.
