The vanquished rider, distinguished by his characteristic pointed Phrygian cap identifying him as a barbarian cavalryman, twists back to face his assailant and raises his left arm in a gesture of supplication or defense. A shield lies on the ground to the right of the fallen figure, and an officina control letter appears in the left field. The exergue bears the mint mark BSIRM● identifying this piece as a product of the second officina at Sirmium. The reverse legend FEL TEMP REPARATIO proclaims the restoration of fortunate times, a propagandistic theme common to mid-fourth-century bronze coinage. |
