Obverse description Standing frontal figure of the caliph rendered in the Byzantine imperial tradition, wearing long robes and a crown with pendilia, holding a globus cruciger in the left hand and a long sceptre or staff in the right. The figure is depicted in a hieratic, frontal pose typical of late Byzantine and early Umayyad transitional coinage. The fields show traces of a surrounding Kufic Arabic legend. The overall style reflects the Arab-Byzantine period during which Islamic authorities overstruck or imitated existing Byzantine folles designs.
Obverse script Arabic (Kufic)
Obverse lettering محمد رسول الله
(Translation: Muhamad rasul allah: `Mohammed is the messenger of God.`)
