Baudouin II governed Edessa twice — first as count from 1100, then again after ransoming himself from Artuqid captivity in 1108, a period that defines this issue. His first reign ended when he was captured at the Battle of Harran in 1104, and the intervening years saw the county administered under considerable instability. The folles struck after his return reflect a polity that had survived near-collapse.
