Vladislaus II — Władysław Jagiellończyk to the Poles — came to the Hungarian throne in 1490 after a contested election that saw him defeat Maximilian I's claim by political maneuvering rather than military force. His reign was fiscally catastrophic. The nobility had extracted the decretum maius of 1486 from his predecessor, gutting royal revenue, and Vladislaus proved constitutionally incapable of reversing the damage — contemporaries called him Rex Bene, "King Good," a sardonic nickname for his habit of approving whatever was put before him.
Gold florin production continued through these years largely on inertia, sustained by Hungary's Transylvanian mines rather than any coherent monetary policy.
