Matthias II secured the Hungarian crown in 1608 after forcing his brother Rudolf II to abdicate the kingdom — a dynastic rupture that owed as much to Rudolf's erratic governance and obsession with alchemy as to any formal political grievance. The Hungarian estates extracted significant concessions in exchange for their support, including religious freedoms that would prove difficult for later Habsburgs to honor.
His reign lasted only until 1619, making this a short-window issue. The .990 fineness places it among the purer gold florins of the period, minted at Kremnica, the principal Hungarian gold mint that had operated continuously since 1328.
