Matthias II had been Holy Roman Emperor for only a year when this florin was struck, having wrested administrative control of Hungary from his brother Rudolf II through a series of political maneuvers culminating in the Peace of Žitva-Torok in 1606. That treaty also ended the Long Turkish War, and the Hungarian mints were under persistent pressure throughout his reign to produce gold coinage for military indemnities and border garrison payments along the Ottoman frontier.
The Kremnica mint — almost certainly the source of this piece — operated under constant logistical strain in the early seventeenth century, managing bullion supply disruptions as regional silver production declined and war debts remained unsettled.
