Kristóf Báthori ruled Transylvania as voivode under the nominal suzerainty of his brother István, who had departed for Poland in 1576 upon election as king. The arrangement was politically convenient but constitutionally ambiguous — Kristóf never held the title of prince outright, governing instead through a delegated authority that his gold coinage had to project nonetheless. He died in 1581, leaving a minor son, Zsigmond, whose regency would consume the following decade.
The Resch variants 20–22 distinguish minor die differences in the reverse field, a granularity that matters primarily to specialists building complete type sets of the Báthori issues.
