John of Hornes held the Prince-bishopric of Liège from 1484 until his death in 1505, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the Habsburgs and the persistent erosion of ecclesiastical independence in the Low Countries. His gold florins draw directly on the Rhine florin tradition that had dominated ecclesiastical coinage in the region for over a century, issued under the authority of a prince-bishop who was simultaneously a territorial ruler, a vassal of the Empire, and a significant player in the complex dynastic politics of the Burgundian Netherlands.
Delmonte G#334 / Dengis 771 is not among the more commonly encountered Liège gold issues of the period.
