John I inherited the Aragonese throne in 1387 following the death of Peter IV, under whom the florin had been reintroduced as Aragon's principal gold-based trade coin modeled on the Florentine fiorino. That John's florin appears here in silver rather than gold is itself a fiscal signal — the Crown's bullion reserves and monetary policy shifted repeatedly across his reign, which ended abruptly with his death during a hunting accident in 1396.
