| Obverse description | Full-length frontal figure of Saint John the Baptist standing in the field, draped in flowing robes, with a nimbus (halo) surrounding the head, raising the right hand in blessing and holding a long staff or palm frond in the left hand. A small lily or floral device appears to the left of the figure. The surrounding Latin legend reads S IOHANNES B, identifying the patron saint of Florence whose imagery was adopted for Aragonese florins. The strike is irregular, typical of hammered gold coinage of the period. |
