Reverse description Saint John the Baptist is depicted standing facing, in full length, wearing a long robe and holding a staff surmounted by a cross that intersects the surrounding circular legend. The figure is rendered in the stilted Gothic manner typical of mid-14th century French hammered gold coinage. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters reads S IOHANNES B, identifying the saint. Small ornamental stops divide the legend. The reverse design closely mirrors that of the Florentine florin, adapted to French royal iconographic conventions.
