Philip the Good struck this florin during the final year of his life, as administrative authority over the Burgundian Netherlands was already drifting toward his son Charles. The "Burgundian" florin type was part of Philip's broader effort to impose monetary coherence across his patchwork of inherited and acquired territories — Brabant, Flanders, Holland, and the rest — each of which retained stubborn minting traditions of its own. The alloy, slightly below the Florentine standard, reflects pragmatic compromise rather than debasement policy.
