Antoine de Vaudémont, Duke of Lorraine from 1508, modeled this florin closely on Rhenish and Florentine gold currency then dominating upper Rhineland trade networks. Lorraine occupied an awkward economic corridor between the French crown and the Holy Roman Empire, and Antoine's gold coinage was a deliberate instrument of that balancing act — acceptable on both sides of a shifting political border.
