Reverse description Central field depicts a facing bust of Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, shown with long hair and beard, wearing a mantle and holding a cross-staff, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The Saint's features are rendered in a hieratic, Romanesque manner typical of mid-13th century Florentine coinage. A Latin legend encircles the outer field, separated by small cross stops. The reverse iconography establishes the religious authority of the commune under the patronage of the Baptist.
