Obverse description The obverse depicts the Great Seal of the State of Tennessee in high relief, featuring an agricultural scene with a plow, sheaf of wheat, and cotton plant in the upper register above a river scene with a riverboat, all within a beaded inner border. The Roman numeral XVI appears at the top of the central device, with the inscriptions AGRICULTURE and COMMERCE flanking the central imagery, and the circular legend and date 1796 running around the outer border.
