Obverse description Within a plain inner circle, a standing figure of a young boy depicted in profile, holding a mug in one hand and a pipe in the other, serving as the tavern sign emblem of the Black Boy. The device is rendered in the crude, low-relief style characteristic of mid-17th century English tradesmen's tokens. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading continuously around the periphery of the flan.
