Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any currency bearing his effigy entered circulation, leaving the Royal Mint with approved designs that were never struck for public use. The so-called "Wreath Crown" was among them — a proposed five-shilling piece intended for 1937. What exists from that period are pattern pieces of disputed official status, not circulating coins. This 2017 piece is a modern fantasy struck to fill the gap collectors have always felt around the uncrowned king, carrying no original monetary authority whatsoever.
