Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any currency bearing his effigy entered circulation, making all coins depicting him either patterns struck in anticipation of his reign or later fantasy pieces produced for the collector market. This 2004 issue falls into the latter category — a privately produced piece with no official Royal Mint authorization, trading on the enduring commercial appeal of the abdication story rather than any monetary or governmental mandate.
