| 裏面の説明 | Three-quarter portrait bust of Dutch Arctic explorer Willem Barentsz facing slightly right, bearded and wearing a period ruff collar, occupies the left and lower portion of the field. In the background to the right, a detailed engraving of a tall-masted sailing vessel beset in pack ice is depicted, with jagged ice floes visible in the middle ground and a polar bear rendered in the centre field. The explorer's name 'WILLEM BARENTSZ' appears as a legend in the upper left field, and the inscription '1596 NOVA ZEMBLA 1597' is positioned in the lower right, commemorating his historic Arctic voyage to Novaya Zemlya. |

This is a fantasy piece — not a legal tender issue of the Netherlands — produced in 1996 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Willem Barentsz's third and final Arctic expedition, during which his crew became the first Europeans to overwinter in the high Arctic after their ship was crushed in the ice off Novaya Zemlya. Barentsz himself died on the return voyage in June 1597. The X# catalog prefix confirms non-circulating fantasy status, meaning no issuing authority ever sanctioned this as coinage.
