Muhammad Shah's reign over Jaunpur was cut short by Bahlul Lodi's relentless military pressure from Delhi, and coins from the final years of the sultanate — this piece among them — were struck under conditions of acute political instability. Jaunpur had maintained genuine independence from the Lodis for decades, but by the late 1450s that position was collapsing. The sultanate would fall entirely by 1479.
