Moulay 'Abd al-Rahman ruled Morocco through a period of acute external pressure — the Battle of Isly in 1844 saw French forces under Bugeaud crush the Moroccan army after the sultan's support for Algerian resistance leader Abd al-Qadir. The economic disruption that followed made small copper falus the coins most Moroccans actually handled daily, struck at Fes in quantities that varied considerably year to year under the Islamic lunar calendar dating system.
