Moulay Abd al-Rahman came to power in 1822 after the turbulent reign of his uncle Moulay Slimane, inheriting a treasury depleted by years of tribal revolt and a near-total breakdown of commercial infrastructure. The falus was the lowest denomination in circulation and functioned almost entirely in local bazaar exchange — the copper coinage of urban poor and rural market sellers who never handled silver at all. Moroccan copper of this period was notoriously inconsistent in flan preparation, and weight variation within a single issue is the rule rather than the exception.
