Burhan Nizam Shah III ruled Ahmadnagar as a minor under regent control for most of his reign, during which the Sultanate was fighting a losing defensive war against the Mughals. Malik Ambar, the Abyssinian slave-general who effectively ran the state, kept the administration — and the mint — functioning long after the kingdom had lost its capital Ahmadnagar city to Akbar's forces in 1600. These fractional copper pieces were practical instruments of a government operating from shifting field capitals rather than a secure seat of power.
