Abd Allah al-Ghalib ruled the Saadian sultanate from 1557 until his death in 1574, consolidating Moroccan power in the decade following the dynasty's decisive defeat of the Portuguese-backed Wattasids. The falus was the lowest denomination in regular circulation — a copper coin meant for daily market use — and Saadian copper issues of this period survive in widely varying condition owing to Morocco's humid coastal climate and the corrosive effects of centuries of soil burial.
