Additional information

Ganja — modern-day Azerbaijan — was a contested frontier city that changed hands repeatedly between the Safavids and the Ottomans across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By the mid-1630s, Shah Abbas II had reasserted Safavid control over the region, and the local mint's resumption of copper coinage was a direct administrative signal of reestablished authority. Falus issues from provincial mints like Ganja were purely local instruments, rarely traveling far from their city of issue, which explains why surviving examples tend to show either heavy wear from concentrated local use or near-pristine surfaces from hoarding.
