Reverse description Central field displays a multi-line Arabic Kufic inscription in horizontal registers, naming the Tahirid governor Tahir b. 'Abd Allah and his subordinate Yahya b. Asa, along with the mint name al-Shash and the date of issue. A dotted inner border frames the central inscription, and a circular marginal legend runs around the periphery of the coin. The style is consistent with Tahirid-period provincial fals coinage from Transoxiana, with bold but somewhat crudely rendered Kufic script on an irregular hammered flan showing patches of oxidation and patination.
