The central text references the Abbasid caliph al-Musta'sim Billah, Commander of the Faithful, as an acknowledgment of suzerain authority, a common practice on Artuqid coinage of this period. The script is executed in a bold, angular style consistent with mid-thirteenth century Islamic epigraphy. The flan is irregular and the strike is slightly off-center, typical of hammered copper issues from Mardin. A pierced hole is visible near the coin's lower margin, mirroring the obverse. |
